Frequently Asked Questions

People often ask me questions about coaching so I’ve asked (and answered!) what I think are the most common ones. If you can’t find the answer to your question here, please contact me and I’ll be happy to help.

What is the difference between coaching, therapy and mentoring? Aren’t they all just the same thing?

No, not at all! They’re quite different:

The International Coach Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential. Coaching acknowledges the past while placing the emphasis firmly on the present and the future, helping you to explore your own choice of actions to achieve specific goals in your work or personal life.

Therapy or Counselling

This focuses on improving overall psychological health. In contrast to the coaching process, which is all about what’s happening now and how to create the future you deserve, therapy may spend a considerable time in understanding and “healing” the past sources of current behaviour and circumstances.

Mentoring is about guiding an individual from one’s own experience or sharing expertise in a specific area of industry, business or career development. Coaching could include some degree of mentoring, but this isn’t the norm.

Is Coaching Confidential?

Absolutely, yes. I adhere to the international Coaching Federation Code of ethics,  and will never reveal the content of our coaching sessions to anyone unless you are in danger of harming yourself or others.

You, of course, are free to share whatever you like with others.

How Does Coaching Work? What’s the Process?

It’s all very straightforward. We’ll start with a 90 minute introductory session, either by telephone or if you can, face to face. This meeting will help us get to know each other better and will enable us to consider what you wish to focus on during your programme and how I can best support you as your coach.

We’ll then schedule two telephone or Skype coaching sessions each month, each typically lasting from 45 to 60 minutes, which I’m happy to support by telephone or email. Face to face sessions can be arranged, depending on your availability and location.

Between our sessions, you’ll have homework to do! It may take the form of actions, tasks or questions to reflect on or consider. This is a challenging aspect of coaching, but has a tremendous impact and is where the change really starts to happen. Plus I’ll be supporting you throughout your journey.

For executive coaching clients, the coaching progamme will be tailored to your specific needs and business priorities. As the programme is bespoke, it will be agreed with you, your manager and supported by your HR Manager.

How many coaching sessions will I need?

You’re taking a significant step because you want or need change. You also want to gain real value from your investment with me.

I suggest a minimum 3 month commitment but would recommend that we work together for 6 months, if you can. Lasting change may not happen immediately, so a 6 month time period allows our coaching relationship to develop and gives you time to put your ideas and plans into action.

Whatever you decide, after 3 or 6 months, you can continue to have further sessions on a month by month basis.

May I have a trial session before I commit?

Yes, of course. I offer a free 30 minute sample session to see if it could work for you and for us both to decide if we feel comfortable about moving forwards.

Does Coaching Actually Work?

Yes, it really does BUT only if you are ready to make changes. You must be willing to commit to the coaching process, spend real time understanding yourself, where you are now and where you want to be.

Every person is unique and totally different. The goals you set and the choices you make are totally up to you.

So in summary, what is coaching and how can Talent for Change help me?

Quite simply, coaching focuses on helping you achieve specific goals in your career and in your life.  It’s truly challenging and you need to be committed to change.  However, working together, focusing on the present and the future, I’ll help you create a series of actions to take you towards personal and professional fulfilment.

  • You’ll have someone to listen, be curious about and genuinely engaged in your ambitions and motivations.
  • I’ll ask the questions that you may find you’ve been avoiding asking yourself.
  • I’ll focus on helping you find the clarity you are seeking.
  • I don’t tell you what to do.  This isn’t a passive or prescriptive process. It’s a team effort. You will find it challenging but ……you’ll be offered warmth and encouragement.

I’ll make sure that moving out of your comfort zone and being accountable for the actions that you decide to take happens within a safe, supported and trusting environment.  You’ll have a champion, who believes in you and everything you can achieve.

If you’re ready to start making that change, give me a call now or contact me via email to book a complementary sample session and to discuss a personalised coaching programme to help you achieve your goals.
